SHOOTIN', HUNTIN', AND RELOADIN' WITH THE OL' MISSOURI HILLBILLY |
| Uploaded February 18, 2023 Well, here goes an effort to catch up with some overdue newsletter material. Guess I've been spending too much time with my volunteer work at the elks for the past year or two. Anyway, this will be a kind of special edition emphasizing the Deer Hunting on my Brother Ed's place back in Missouri, where we grew up. Normally this would be my Christmas with Family edition, but that didn't happen until January. Our traditional Christmas Eve celebration featuring Little Heifer's famous Chicken Bisque was postponed because of a snow and ice storm that simply made the roads too hazardous to travel for Rick and Jennifer. So, you'll hear about our Christmas in the January/February edition, assuming I ever get to that one! One recent development that I will relay, is the new computer I'm writing this on. My old 2008 version of my Macbook Pro was becoming so obsolete it would no longer parse many modern websites, and many of the software applications are no longer supported and don't work any more. The good news is that the new computer is faster and will navigate newer websites. The bad news is that the new Macbook Pro is equipped with Apple's new M2 Pro chip and some of the software providers have not caught up with versions that will operate on the new chips. All in due time I guess. So, the balance of this newsletter will concentrate on Whitetail Deer. For those who deer hunt, you might want to protect your keyboard as you view some of the pictures because you may drool on it as you peruse them. Ed tells me there were a total of 9 hunters during the first week of the season. They are either friends of Ed's or his two sons, Jason and Scott. As you will see, I'd say they had a pretty good season: ![]() Not sure who this one belongs to, but you'll see more. ![]() This was the first weekend's take. Ed's 'Huntin' Cabin in the background. ![]() The traditional meat pole at the cabin. My memory tells me Ed said the one on the far right weighed 230 pounds field dressed. ![]() Here are some of the Hunters. The only one I know is Nephew Scott Parman far right. ![]() One of two truckloads of deer ready for skinning and the Butcher Block. ![]() Truckload number two. It should be noted here
that the does mixed in with the loads are perfectly
legal as multiple antlerless tags are available over
the counter. And, they do make better table fare
than those old bucks.
![]() What an impressive display of mature whitetail bucks! ![]() This young man's name is Korbin. He is the Grandson of a schoolmate Ed and I went to High School with. This deer was taken on a nearby farm. This month's
hillbilly wisdom comes from a Cowboy Quote from
Robert O'Brien:
"Experience is the hardest kind of teacher. It gives you the test first and the lesson afterward." Well, it's time to shut down here, so. . . . . 'Til next time, Keep 'em shootin' straight, shoot 'em often, and above all, BE SAFE!!! THE OL' HILLBILLY Copyright 2022-23 - All Rights Reserved |
